France `betrayed` the mediation mission in the Minsk Group

Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry issues statement on French Senate`s bill criminalizing denial of so-called Armenian genocide

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has issued a statement on the bill adopted by the French Senate criminalizing denial of the so-called Armenian genocide.

The statement says the Republic of Azerbaijan expresses deep sorrow for the adoption of the bill “Considering the criminalization of denial of existence of genocides recognized by law” by French Senate on January 23, 2012 and condemns this decision. The French Senate`s unilateral steps, which are contrary to the principles of democracy, human rights, freedom of speech and expression, can seriously damage this country`s participation in some regional processes and cause several unpleasant consequences.

The statement goes on to say that French parliamentarians, who are turning a blind eye to the violation of the rights of about one million Azerbaijanis and occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands as a result of aggression by Armenia in the end of the 20th century, use this decision for their political goals and cast doubts on the objectivity of France. >>>

2011: The top stories across the Caucasus

The regional identity of the South Caucasus remains a tricky question, and thus choosing stories with a “regional” character is not always easy

2011 was a year that destabilized many of our global perceptions, notably with regard to the developments in the Middle East, which demonstrated the transience of the “status quo” and the power of the people to stand up against tyranny and injustice.

The media has heralded the unfinished revolution in the Middle East as a digital or leaderless revolution, but it is more hesitant to discuss the further implications of this lack of stability in terms of a revolutionary leader. Bets are off on what should be considered the great story of 2011, which has seen historic revolutions, their turbulent aftermath and fierce debates.

But looking to a more regional focus in the context of the Caucasus, we find other stories of equal local significance. For Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia, 2011 marked the 20th anniversary of regaining independence from the Soviet Union.

I have picked out the top 10 stories from the region, both successes and failures. In no particular order, these are... >>>

Dialogue-Nagorno Karabakh

Berlin has hosted discussion of issues, related to the resolution of the Karabakh conflict

News.Az interviews Milli Majlis deputy, political scientist Rasim Musabayov.

Berlin has hosted discussion of issues, related to the resolution of the Karabakh conflict. What do you, as a participant of this event, think were the results of this event?

Armenian community members, who did not attend the forum ‘Dialogue-Nagorno Karabakh’ in Berlin have in fact harmed themselves. Everyone could see that Karabakh consists of not only Armenians. It again showed that the statement of non-acceptance by Azerbaijanis of co-existence with Armenians in a myth. In other words, Armenian side avoided communication at that time when Azerbaijani side could voice its position. During the forum, we proved again that Azerbaijanis are ready for co-existence in Karabakh, while Armenians are not. I have to say that this factor is treated seriously in Europe. This could be noticed among German organizers of the event, who regretted that the Armenian community did not attend. >>>

Azerbaijan in the UNSC

Its membership in the UN Security Council may place the situation and rights of ethnic minorities in Iran on the int'l agenda

The United Nations recently elected Azerbaijan as a non-permanent Security Council member for the first time in the country’s 20-year history of independence since the breakup of the Soviet Union. Azerbaijan’s two-year membership on the council will help focus international attention on three important geopolitical issues: resolving the Nagorno–Karabagh conflict, showcasing a different model of religion and state relations in the Muslim world, and drawing attention to the substantial multi-ethnic makeup of the population of Iran.

Azerbaijan is located in the Caucasus, on the crossroads between three major geopolitical players: Russia, Iran and Turkey. The majority of Azerbaijan’s citizens are Shi’ite Muslims, but most are secular. The country celebrates its ethnic and religious minorities, and a Jewish community has thrived in Azerbaijan for centuries. Azerbaijan has eight million citizens, and three times as many ethnic Azerbaijanis (25 million) live across the border in neighboring Iran. >>>

Eurasia or EuRussia?

What provoked this projected institutionalization of Russia’s geopolitical resurgence?

Last Sunday put an end to the speculation over whether Vladimir Putin will return to the helm, as he was nominated as the United Russia Party’s presidential candidate in the March 2012 elections.

Putin has announced his motto as “never look back.” This news led to further speculation about his “Eurasian Union” idea: Is it a genuine alternative to EU policy in the former Soviet Union, or a PR move that will be forgotten after the elections? The issue now is not the content and direction of Moscow’s strategy or the extent to which it feels it can and must pursue this “Eurasian Union” quest, but rather what mistakes the EU has made.

What provoked this projected institutionalization of Russia’s geopolitical resurgence? In order to answer this question, the EU must “look back” at its own actions. >>>
